Fintech Week 2018
November 5 - November 8
Georgetown Law’s Fintech Week is an annual event where thought leaders from fintech firms across the country–from PayPal and Amazon to OnDeck, and from Ripple and R3 to Cloud 9 Technologies and beyond–describe their business, and explain how their services intersect with markets for a Washington, DC audience consisting of policymakers, market participants, academics, lawyers, and regulators.
Fintech Week’s origins lie in IIEL’s role as the venue where then-Comptroller of the Currency Thomas J. Curry first announced the Fintech Charter program, kicking off a stream of fintech programming at the Institute that has grown exponentially since then, epitomized by this signature event.
In a world of rapidly evolving innovation and regulation, precious few opportunities are afforded market participants, regulators and academic thought-leaders to seriously discuss, discover, and debate changes in the financial ecosystem, and what they mean for consumers and investors. Even as Fintech Week has evolved into Washington’s premier event for rigorous fintech policy dialogue and information-sharing, its unique objectives remain modest: “to provide a safe space for regulators, entrepreneurs and thought leaders to engage in serious, frank discussions relating to risks and rewards of new technologies that are changing market ecosystems across the world.”
The inaugural Fintech Week took place at Georgetown Law on October 18-20, 2017. The second annual Fintech Week is scheduled for November 5-8, 2018. In a first, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has decided to partner with an academic institution, the IIEL, to tackle a seminal phenomenon of the last years—the explosion of cryptocurrencies and assets in the global markets. As such, the first two days of Fintech Week 2018 will take place at Georgetown Law and the IMF, respectively. The following two days will involve high-level U.S. and foreign policymakers and market participants tackling issues as diverse as GDPR and fintech, trade and fintech technology, artificial intelligence, blockchain governance and peer-to-peer financing.
